Ephesians 2:8-9 says, "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast."
Let's imagine that I die and I go to stand before god (or Jesus, or whomever). He tells me salvation is by faith, and I didn't believe, and therefore my name is not in the Book of Life, and I'm going to hell for all eternity.
I point out to him that, yes, according to the Bible, salvation is by faith; faith is a gift from God; he did not give me the gift; therefore it's not my fault that I didn't believe, and it is unfair for him to send me to hell.
"God, if you really wanted to have a relationship with me, you'd have given me (a) the faith or (b) the evidence. Since you didn't provide either one, it's not my fault, and it's evil for you to punish me for a decision that you made."
God replies, "You exercised your free will."
I say, "Bullshit. What about the people you did give faith to? Did you violate their free will when you did that? Did you violate Paul's free will when you appeared to him on the road to Damascus?"
God mulls this over. "Damn, Josh! I never thought of it that way. Guess I was wrong. You win. Welcome to heaven. And Josh, can you stop saying 'fuck' all the time?"
