There is very little doubt that when members of the Texas legislature voted for this law requiring that the Ten Commandments be posted in every classroom in Texas, they knew that it would be immediately struck down by the Supreme Court (and it was).
Basically, this new law required that a religious message be put up on the walls of public schoolrooms (the very first commandment is "Thou shalt have no other gods before me"). A first-grader could figure out that this violates the First Amendment. But the members of the legislature also knew that passing such a law would make them heroes in the eyes of most voters. In other words, they were willing to do something that was completely futile (and was doomed to failure) just to make themselves look good. They were grandstanding. What a sorry bunch of hypocrite assholes. |
